Summer Local Living 2024

Summer Local Living May 2024— 17 AUSTIN COLLETTE Contributor A t long last, that coveted time of the calendar year has arrived. School is out. Summer is about to officially be- gin. No more school pickup lines, athletics practices, drama re- hearsals. Sure, there’s tryouts happening for the fall semester sports, but they’re only for a short time. Now that summer is around the corner it begs the question, “What do I do with my free time?” There’s a wide variety of an- swers but let’s start with the sim- ple one: Be active! Don’t just lay around the house all day. There’s so much to do. • If you’re the adven- turous type, go hiking. You might have to make a bit of a drive, but it’s worth it. You get to experience nature and its great exercise. Plus, you just might get on a high point somewhere with a beautiful view of the land for miles and miles. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water and bug spray. • Maybe camping is your thing. There’s plenty of camp- grounds nearby: Turkey Creek, Fairview, Sharon Johnston, Monte Sano, Tim’s Ford State Park and David Crockett State Park. Bring a bike and find you a good trail. Build camp fire, make some s’mores. Try even roasting a chip over the fire if you’re up for small change. • Want a new hobby? Try disc golf. Bring a friend, find course nearby, of course a few discs and you’re all set. Some disk golfers recom- mend a “starter kit” of discs that consist of these three types: driver, mid-range, and putter. Once you have those, go to a course and practice. Figure out how your discs fly, how far you can throw them and your accu- racy. Don’t be intimidated if you see someone with big back pack that carries 50 discs. That person has probably played for years and knows exactly how each disc flies. Master the ones your start out with, then slowly add to the arsenal from there. Like Bruce Lee said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Need a good course to start out with? Don Davidson Com- plex in Lincoln County is great for beginners. It has a good mix of short and long baskets, tress to make you work your aim, and open spots where you throw a drive as hard as you can. A helpful tip in case you hap- pen to lose one of your discs: write your name and phone number on them with a marker. If someone finds your disc, they can contact you and you can ar- range a way to get it back. That’s a few suggestions on what to do with your summer. There’s plenty more options too. Go find something you enjoy and do a lot of it. Try a few new things while you’re at it. Bottom line, be active. Have a great summer.
