After an invocation by 2021- 22 Student Council President, Porter Pittman. Head of School Julianne T. Duvall, warmly welcomed the school community. Ms. Michele T. Faulkner, Chair of the Board of Trustees, awarded the Norma Jean Edwards Volunteer Award to Ms. Emily Thomas and Ms. Phoebe Hollingsworth. This award, established in 2004, was named for one of the school’s all time great volunteers, Norma Jean Edwards, and recognizes volunteers who have worked tirelessly without hesi- tation, without reward, always putting the good of the Academy and children first. Chesapeake Academy’s Sandbox Awards recognize students who have the longest relationship with the school, attending CA from preschool through graduation: Miles Hollingsworth, Sam Antonio, Davis Bugg, and Trevor Haynie earned this designation. The Pamela I. Herrell and J. E. Bouis Athletic Awards are given each year to a girl and boy respectively for outstand- ing athletic achievement. This year’s recipients were Cate Chavez and Sam Antonio. C. Jackson Simmons Award goes to a middle school student to recognize excellence in History and English. This year’s award goes to Ian Jonson. The Excellence in the Arts Award, established in 2006, is given at the dis- cretion of the school’s arts team to stu- dents excelling in aspects of the fine and performing arts. Art teacher Robin Blake presented this year’s Excellence in Arts award to Miles Hollingsworth. Harrison Hinton, is the 2022 recipi- ent of Chesapeake Academy’s Schroeder Cup, the school’s highest honor, which was established by Captain and Mrs. William A. Schroeder to recognize a middle school student who fully gave his/her all to school life: academically, athletically, and socially. The Catherine E. Schroeder Award for a returning fifth through seventh grade student goes to a deserving stu- dent who represents a fantastic work ethic, strong academics, high levels of participation and a big heart. This year’s recipient is Izzy Dew. The Libby & Hiter Harris Family Award goes to a returning fifth and sev- enth grade student who exhibits excel- lence in academics and citizenship. This year’s recipient is Charley Manetz. The Tidewater Foundation Scholarship award goes to a fifth through seventh grade student whose scholar- ship, citizenship and community spirit consistently benefit CA. Baylen Miller was selected by the faculty as this year’s recipient. The Salutatorian Award is award- ed for achieving the second highest academic average in grade eight. The recipient meets or exceeds expecta- tions for conduct and work habits. This award is bestowed on Samuel Antonio. Chesapeake Academy’s Head of School Award is awarded to Harrison Hinton for achieving the highest grade point aver- age in the eighth grade. The recipient of this award must also meet or exceed standards for conduct, citizenship, and work habits. Certificates were awarded to students who consistently stayed on the Head of School List for the entire school year. Miriam Sisson, Kate Johnson, Avery Caisse, and Charley Manetz from the fifth grade were on the Head of School List for the year. Sixth grade students receiving the Head of School List for the year included Matthew Harte-Hackney, Ryann Kenner, Yvelisse Cabocel, Alex Fulmer, Finley Major, and Izzy Dew. Seventh grade recipients include Parker Daley, Chase Carneal, Ian Jonson, and Quenton Harding; and eighth grade recipients included Harrison Hinton, Sam Antonio, and Trevor Haynie. As the commencement exercises drew to a close, Dean of Students Hillary Smith joined Head of School Julie Duvall for the Final Roll Call and presentation of diplomas. The following students, after successfully completing the require- ments of the Chesapeake Academy curriculum, officially matriculated to become Osprey alumni. Head of School Julianne Duvall addressed each of the matriculating students individually, noting personal highlights, growth, aspirations, and fond memories from their time at Chesapeake Academy. Most importantly, she con- veyed the school’s affection for these graduates and confidence in the prepara- tion of these graduates as they move on to their next schools.
