4 Morristown Magazine Return of The King T he Lion ain’t sleeping no more. After decades in storage, the king of the jungle – or at least the King of Fred Miller Park, Fred the Lion is back to his rightful place thanks to Morristown-Ham- blen Lions Club, the Morristown Parks and Recreation Department and the crafts- manship of a Minnesota=based specialty bu- siness. Fred’s tale is a little blurry, but it began in the 70s when the Cherokee Lions Club put him in the park for the first time. There he reigned for year after year, summer after summer, providing cool, refreshing water and frequent photo ops for those willing to stick their head in the Lion’s mouth. But the summer sun is unforgiving and so- metimes kids at the park can be, too. After many years of wear and tear, Fred was mo- ved to storage in the late 90s. And there he stayed, a caged and somewhat forgotten Lion. For the next 20 years, he sat in Morristown Parks and Recreation Department’s storage, After years in Storage Fred the Lion has returned to rule Fred Miller Park
