If you were to de ¿ ne ‘the greatest evil,’ you might think of murder, child abuse, or human traf ¿ cking. C.S. Lewis mentions something else: pride. He considers this the ultimate rebellion against God, from which all other sins spring. In this reading plan, we want to explore what the Bible says about pride and which consequences pride has for our lives. Scripture and devotional courtesy of bible.com . That was theyear that Iwas introducedtoMs.Cindy Owenby, my kindergarten teacher. To my fi ve-year-old eyes, she was beautiful, and she had the most magni fi cent things in her classroom. To my awe and amazement, she was just the fi rst in a long line of amazing teachers that I would encounter. I hadnoway of knowing at the time that I would take the scenic route to ful fi lling my dream; however, with a little grit, some long hours, and determination, I did arrive! I guess the Good Lord decided that if I was going to do this, I needed to know what I was talking about, because I STRUGGLED in school, all the way through. I believe it was probably fi fth or sixth grade before the words on the page stopped moving around and I stopped calling the word saw was and mirror writing. If I had a penny for every time Mrs. Janet Bowden told me, “You just said that word right up here,” I would probably be rich. When learning fi nally came tome a little easier, Imade it harder. I decided that I didn’t like going to school very much, so I was “sick” a lot, and fell behind. Eventually, I made it to the glory days of high school. Things were going pretty well. I had friends and made good grades. Then I took it to a new level of di ffi culty. I fell in love. We married the summer before my junior year, started a family immediately, and I quit school. Thankfully, my friend and teacher, Mr. Christopher Madeo, would not let me completely give up on my future. He babysat while I took practice tests for a GED, then insisted that I take the real test. Being a wife and mother ful fi lled me completely, so much so that within fi ve years, I had two more children. I was fortunateenoughtobeabletostayathome with our children while they were small. I even got to play teacher! Then came the dreaded day that I had not prepared for, my oldest baby had to start kindergarten. What would I do when they were all in school? I would be alone, all day. Luckily, when my middle child went to kindergarten, she had Love Smith, who welcomed me into her classroom as a parent volunteer. Fortune smiled on me again the next year when my youngest also had Mrs. Smith as a teacher. I spent so much time at school that it probably seemed that I worked there. Because life had dictated that I would not have more children, I had to fi nd a way to stay in this magical world. So, I began the long journey to becoming a teacher. For most people, obtaining a bachelor’s degree takes three and a half to four years. Remember that I like to make things di ffi cult. I got a job to pay for gas to go back and forth to school and still got through an associate’s degree in a reasonable amount of time. I got a better job with more demands on my time. By this time, my children had grown and began to pursue their own interests, which I was determined to support. The negative self-talk kicked it up a notch and told me how sel fi sh it would be for me to delve into more classes that would make me less available tomy family, and oh yea, did I really think I was smart enough to teach? Time passed, and life hit me in the face once more. I became a grandmother! Not only did I have to let my children go and start school, now I would have to let themhave their own life. I had a job that I didn’t particularly care for, but it helped to pay the bills. Even better, my employer had an incentive program to pay for college. The Lord had led me to this path again and I had a decision to make. I decided to go back to school. Nothing big, just a couple of classes. At this point I was a wife, Mama, and Maw-maw, full time employee working an insane amount of overtime, and a student. Yet, I trudged on. Finally, twelve years after beginning college, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree and earned a teacher license. Next, came the process of interviewing for a job, which I discovered that I am no good at. You would think as many times as I did it, I would have gotten better, but no. I am not assertive, I’m overweight, and older. At that time, there was not a teacher shortage, so I was interviewing against at least a hundred people who were younger, more boisterous, and more aesthetically pleasing. Finally, after three years of striking out, Bonnie Reese decided to take a chance on me. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, I have a master’s degree, I am a wife of forty years, a mother to three amazing daughters, a Maw-maw to seven outstanding grandchildren, and a teacher of about two hundred children, over a ten- year span. I love them all! So, you see, I did not go into teaching for summers o ff , spring break, fall break, and winter break. I believe to my soul that teaching is what I was called to do. I strive to give each student what they need to be successful. I am fair, consistent, and have high expectations; however, I stay awake nights thinking of what can be done di ff erently to meet the needs of that one child that just doesn’t get it, or what can be done to push the high achiever to the next level, or how I can best help that child who has bigger struggles outside of school. Each year holds di ff erent challenges, as well as in each individual student, there are di ff erent challenges. When I see those young adults out working who once sat in my class, I tell my husband, “Look. That is one of my babies.” I love what I do. My fi rst group of third grade students are seniors this year. To them I say, “Therewill be bumps in the road. Fight for your dreams; never give up. You are loved forever and you are always enough!” Becoming a Teacher –Photo Submitted n g e k e e g e l e n h w e y r
