By Joseph Bradford I t has been my pleasure to have been a public servant for the past twenty-two years, fi rst in law enforcement followed by a second career in education and a seat on the Lewisburg City Council. I am privileged to get up every morning and teach about the topics that interest me most: U.S. history, American government, and economics. I often remind my students of the importance of these subjects despite the lack of questions related to them on the ACT. The decisions we make at the ballot box and in our fi nances have the power to shape our lives for years! To be in a position to teach children about the workings of government and the economy is a great responsibility and honor. Teaching children how to think, not what to think, is my daily goal. Over the years, I have observed a growing nationwide disconnect be- tween the public and their schools. This is a lamentable development be- cause what I see every day is teachers showing up and caring about Marshall County’s children. These are people who provide supplies out of their own pockets. They set up corner food pan- tries and clothing closets, and they put in hours no one ever sees in their ef- forts to do the best jobs they possibly can. I feel these things deserve to be mentioned because there are people in powerful positions who seek to deepen the rift between the schools and the public. As a whole, we have a good sys- tem sta ff ed by good people. I am happy to call many of them “friend.” Would I do anything di ff erently if I had it all to do over again? No. I have had the great privilege of teaching a generation of Marshall County’s chil- dren about the governmental and fi - nancial systems into which they have been born. My advice to anyone con- sidering a teaching career is simple. Do you have a passion for the subject content and for helping others under- stand it? If so, do you have the ability to maintain order in an environment that can quickly devolve into chaos? If the answers to these questions are “yes,” pursue your dream. Children of today are not all that di ff erent compared to those of years past. They know the real deal when they see it, and they will fol- low a leader who commands their re- spect.
