Whether I was at my alma mater at Forrest, as a student, then a teacher, or inside the wonderful walls of CHES where my children received their early educa- tional beginnings by some of the BEST educators I know, or walking the halls of Delk-Henson Intermediate School where I teach awesome students and work along-side the most amazing teachers around. The public education classroom is “my happy place!” Even with the ever-changing teach- er expectations, the much-discussed data-based instruction, and some of the negative attitudes that are now rid- dling the teaching profession-----I sim- ply love to teach! Now……… I still love a snow day, the months of June and July are my favorite, and I go home on some days thinking I may never go back! Howev- er, when all my complaining gets old, and no one wants to hear it anymore, I get extremely nervous pondering re- tirement or changing careers at age 55. Teaching is what I do and I cannot imagine NOT walking into a classroom and greeting students each day! My success as a teacher is not cal- culated by test scores, straight A stu- dents, or school letter grades. To me, it is measured by seeing my students ex- cel in being good people. It is going to community events and having former students go out of their way to come say hi, give me a hug, and proceed to tell me how many essays they have written or what novel they are currently read- ing. It is being able to say that I have 33 years of teaching experience, and there is still nothing better than a good day at school! Looking back on being an educator in a small town like Chapel Hill, Ten- nessee, I cannot help but realize how wonderfully fortunate I am. It makes me so proud that some of my for- mer students clean my teeth every six months, keep my gray hairs covered, teach Sunday school with me, coach my children/grandchildren’s sports teams, take my Sonic, Subway, and Amigos’ orders, take care of my husband, Scott, on his many trips to Brooks Grocery Store, take care of my money at our lo- cal banks. Best of all…..I have taught, or currently teach with people that once upon a time, I watched walk the halls of Forrest, CHES, and DHIS as students! I am surrounded by proof that the public education classroom, while as demanding and stressful as it may be, is one of the best places to spend a life- time. Leonard loves to teach –Photo Submitted
