Marshall County Post, Thursday February 29, 2024— 5A Visiting in Old Civil District 15 Black History Part 2 By Stephanie Mason White C ivil District 15 in Mar- shall County, TN, was once, was an up and com- ing place embracing its citizens and communities for those of color. Many places no longer exist, and one time never even o ffi - cially placed on a County Map, even though their families lived and pros- pered for a while. I will try to list the names of these towns that were only known at time as Colored parts. In my research, I found these names and have become familiar with only a few. The towns of Silver Creek, Wilhoite, Helton, Newbern, Tin Cup Alley, Kinney town, Blackwell, Cinch Row, Verona, Caney Springs, and Spring Place town. This article is meant to mention the names, ac- knowledge that yes, they once existed also revisit articles that were submit- ted by my mother, Ms. Annie Mason in the year 2003, and also the article submitted by her grand- daughter Erika White twenty years later. Ms. Annie was shar- ing some tidbits of grow- ing up in the Belfast area. She told of living on a family farm that was not share cropped, as were a lot of her neighbors. She remembered that some families grew, picked and sold cotton as well as oth- er crops. She recalls that many toys and things of enjoyment were hard to come by. One thing that stood out in her memory was, during hog killing time, her father would collect and clean the blad- ders for the children to in fl ate and play with like balloons. Also during this time, families were able to get an item from the hog that is considered as a delight to some. That item, chitlins. Some like it, some do not, I person- ally do not, but everybody has their own taste prefer- ences, I guess. Belfast also had at least two commu- nity churches with small congregation numbers. These small churches were in walking distance to the family homes for their worshiping services and there was an aban- doned water hole from a rock crusher company on Old Belfast Road that was used for baptizing. My research has shown in the time frame of the early 1900’s, most of the Civil District 15 changed to mostly Civil District 3, was a thriv- ing and productive area. I found heavy land buy- ing and selling going on among its citizens during that time. Needmore is one of the communities that I want to touch on. This section of town was considered rural, how- ever, many of the gentle- men living there were not listed on the US Census records as being farm- ers. In fact, there were skilled laborers and con- tractors that were highly sought after for work, liv- ing there. Though most of these men were under the employment of a white business owner, they were highly sought after and their skilled work was praised in our local news- papers. Some of these men were Thomas Gant, S Henderson Davis, John Davis, John French, Crawford Handy Gant, Gilbert Jones, Parrot Wake fi eld, Theodore An- derson, Fate Hill, Andy Grandberry, and so many more, all of which were skilled rock masons, bricklayers and stonema- sons. There were also a few men that excelled by way of their cooking skills. Mr. George Ransom was very well known for his culinary ability, having his name mentioned in news articles telling of upcoming events such as dinners and bar b ques. Those responsible for ad- vertising made sure to list the name of the cook for this event, George Ran- som. This was placed in one of the newspapers front page to make sure all who purchased and read the paper saw the ad. These articles were featured on front pages of the Gazette in 1902 tell- ing of the construction of the new Clayton Hard- ware building highlight- ing the skilled rockwork men, Thos. Gant and Ben Cook as well as the equal- ly skilled brickwork men, John Davis, Henderson Davis and Phil Black were all listed in the workmen that were completing this new building. On February 8, 1924, the Lewisburg Tribune had on its front page a sto- ry of the Baptist Church construction with Gilbert Jones being listed as a well-known stone work man in the county. Many families worked hard, bought and sold land, and were able to leave parcels for their heirs. One family man, after passing left enough land to his widow, that she was able sell parcels that were divided into a subdivision in her name, the Anne Liggett Subdivi- sion. This subdivision is no longer in existence by that name, just like the other little communities that were once enclosed in Old Civil District 15, the parcels of land still stand. These homesteads have been renamed, changed in and out of civil dis- tricts and probably will continue to be. Maybe, just maybe, there will be a person reading this ar- ticle who will see the area once named, Newbern, Sweetwater, Tin Cup Al- ley, Cinch Row, or even Kinney Town, will have a passing memory and a smile. This will be a way to keep these places alive in our hearts. Black History Part 3 By Stephanie Mason White C ook’s Memorial Cem- etery also known as the Colored People’s Burial Ground, East End, East Lewisburg, or Need- more Cemetery. TheColoredHomeBe- nevolent Society was also instrumental in serving the Black People of Mar- shall County during this time, because no Black funeral homes or funeral directors were available or in business yet. I am still trying to fi nd more on the Colored Home Be- nevolent Society. I have seen articles listed in our local newspapers and the Nashville Globe, talking about church services and picnics to help with fundraising. The Real & Personal Estate Society which was formed in the 1890s, worked with the citizens during their sick- ness and burial needs as well, was o ffi cially chart- ed in 1905. Mr. Wesley Ewing had purchased the land and sold one acre to the Society for burials of col- ored people according to the deed signed in the year 1895. Mr. Wesley Ewing died in 1898, per a notice in the newsprint, even though Tennessee did not require County death records that would indicate a burial place, I would imagine he was buried in the cemetery that he was associated with. The selling of his land to Mr. McLean and Mr. Murray allowed the land parcels to be bought by Ben F Cook, fi rst par- cel in 1910, then next part of the year, includ- ing the parcel containing the graveyard conveyed to the Home Benevolent Society. The Trustees of the cemetery, those being Rush Woods, W T Ken- nedy, Jim Biggers, Tom King and Andrew Brown, were sold land by John Roger’s on February 7, 1938. This is when it be- came known as The East- ern Cemetery for Colored People. The Trustees were to be responsible for fencing in the grounds and the right of way o ff of the Old Needmore Road included in the land. Ben Cook passed away in 1937, his children Clarence Cook and Lydia Cook Hicks, sold the part of land left from their fa- ther to the Trustees and made the agreement that the cemetery would be named Cook’s Memorial Cemetery in his honor, per the documentation dated October 10, 1963. The Community Broth- erhood, Inc., a civic or- ganization of Lewisburg, acquired the land from Clarence and Lydia, now Cook’s Memorial Addi- tion, in 1964. I am actively re- searching data for in- formation on Cook’s Memorial Cemetery. I want to know the names of the ones that are rest- ing in the oldest section. With the available online sources at hand, includ- ing the Tennessee Vital statistics records, news- paper articles, and such, I can now start a data- base of the oldest section and the middle section. If any of you know of family and friends that are resting there, please get in contact with me. I would love to have the information so I can add them to my current book project showcasing this resting place. This will be an ongoing project for me to use in completing my book, hopefully it will be of service to someone years from now looking at a little bit of history.
