They de- feated Class 5A Frank- lin Co. (0-2) last Friday night, 28-0. This one felt much more like Pirate foot- ball. Relying on their rushing attack, the Pi- rates ran for 201 yards on 38 attempts. That effort was led by quar- terback Dayon Cooper, who had 149 yards and two touchdowns. Coo- per also went 3-for-7 for 27 yards passing. After a scoreless first quarter, Cooper got the Pirates on the board with a 21-yard run with just over three minutes to go in the half. Running back JaMychal Buckner quickly followed that up with a five-yard run of his own to make it 14-0 at the break. Buckner was second in rushing for the eve- ning with 14 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. Ky’Saun Powell also ran for 33 yards, Zech Green for nine yards, and An- thony Gibbs Jr. for 13 yards. Familiarity also re- turned with the Pirates’ physical defense that dominated the Rebels all night. On their third score, junior defensive lineman Xavier Reviere recovered a Rebels fum- ble, making it 21-0. The Rebels fumbled eight times in total, losing two, and could only muster 52 yards of total o ff ense against the Pirates’ de- fense. Senior Von Cooper also had two intercep- tions. However, fumbles were also a massive prob- lem for the Pirates’ of- fense, which is still fi nd- ing its rhythm after los- ing several veteran play- makers from last year’s team. They coughed up the ball six times, losing three. For the Pirates fi nal score, Dayon Cooper hit pay dirt on a 47-yard run with under nine minutes to go in regulation.
