Andrew’s-Sewanee Gallery welcomes the work of Aleta Chander and is proudly set to dis- play the exhibition from August 19 through Sep- tember 27. Community members will have the opportuni- ty to meet and talk with the artist on Thursday, September 19th, dur- ing a gallery reception from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in the St. Andrew’s- Sewanee Gallery. All are invited to attend. Artist Aleta Chandler produces remarkable ceramic pieces that dis- play an intentional con- nection between nature and design. According to Chandler, she fell in love with clay while watching a pottery demonstration at Dollywood as a teenag- er. “I didn’t know it would be my calling, but I knew it would at least be my buddy, and it has been. I’m inspired by Mid- Century modern designs, vernacular architecture, Steampunk culture, bee- tles, and networks of all kinds including techno- logical, biological, and social.” Chandler aims to create functional vessels that are comfortable to hold and evoke feelings and memories related to these inspirations. She enjoys exploring new forms and surface treatments, periodically changing her aesthetic, while paying careful at- tention to form and craft. Chandler lives and works in Johnson City, running an independent art studio, ArtCurious. For the past 15 years, Chandler has taught ce- ramics to over 200 stu- dents each year. In ad- dition to making found object jewelry and func- tional and non-function- al clay objects, she enjoys the fascination and sense of satisfaction that comes from her students having fun with clay. Tennessee licenses get new look B eginning soon the Tennessee Depart- ment of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) is issuing new Driver Licenses and ID cards with a fresh design and improved security features along with new self-service kiosks, which can reduce wait times at Driver Service Centers. The new credentials and kiosks will expand to all Driver Service Centers over the next fewmonths. The new Driver Li- censes and ID cards prominently feature a stylized version of Ten- nessee’s historic State Capitol and state fl ag with its iconic three-stars representing the state’s three grand divisions. The new design fea- tures waves and patterns printed in very fi ne lines that are not able to be scanned or easily repro- duced. The new credentials are made with a sturdy poly-carbonate compo- sition, incorporate cut- ting edge security and printing techniques. This includes elaborate overlapping of data and graphics and laser en- graved elements that will show if the document has been altered or is fraudu- lent. A machine-readable barcode with applicable class, endorsements, and restrictions are printed on the back of the card. A mini ghost image repeat- ed from the photograph is encoded elements for automated validation to help reduce identity theft. “The new Tennessee Driver Licenses incorpo- rate the latest technology which makes them more di ffi cult to counterfeit, alter, or duplicate,” said TDOSHS Commissioner Je ff Long. “These coun- termeasures help prevent theft and fraud and help keep your identity safe.” There is no need for citizens to obtain a new Driver License or ID with the new design before their existing license or ID expires. Driver Li- censes and ID cards with the old design will be in use alongside the new cards. Previously issued Driver Licenses are valid until the expiration date listed on the card. Indi- viduals do not need to re- place their current Driver License or ID card unless their current credential has reached its expira- tion or a required change is needed, such as a name or address change. The new design will apply to all credentials issued by the TDOSHS including Regular Driver Licenses, Teen/Graduat- ed Driver Licenses, Com- mercial Driver Licenses, Motorcycle License, ID Only License, REAL IDs, and Handgun Carry Per- mits. “We are excited about the added fl exibility and convenience the new self-service kiosks will provide for Tennesse- ans,” said Commissioner Long. “Citizens can com- plete many Driver Servic- es transactions at one of these new kiosks, which will help reduce wait times at Driver Services Centers.” Tennesseans can use the self-service kiosk to complete many Driver Services transactions in- cluding renewing or re- placing a duplicate Driv- er License or ID Card, changing an address, updating emergency con- tact information, advanc- ing a Teen/Graduated Driver License, paying reinstatement fees, and requesting a license reis- sue after reinstatement requirements are met. The new kiosks can take photos and process pay- ments with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a credit or debit card.
