6 —Marion County’s Finest 2024 G reg Steele has had a long and dedicated journey with Jasper First Baptist Church (JFBC). He first served as the student pastor from 2000 to 2002 and returned in October 2013. In March 2015, he transitioned from student pastor to senior pastor, marking his current tenure at the church, which spans over eleven years, including more than nine years as pastor. Originally from Chattanooga, Steele grew up attending East Ridge Baptist Church, now known as Crosspath Church, with his fam- ily. The foundation of his faith and career was laid by his parents, who, along with various Sunday School teachers, guided him in his spiritual journey. His youth pastor, David Brackett, was instrumental in nur- turing his call to full-time ministry, and his growth was further shaped by mentorship from the late Lamar Moore, Troy Walliser, and John Tappan. Steele’s daily responsibilities at JFBC are diverse, encompassing hospital visits, phone calls, emails, meetings, and sermon preparation. He designates Thursdays for ser- mon writing, balancing his tasks to effectively serve his congregation. His favorite aspect of his role is leading worship and sharing God’s word on Sundays, which he finds both fulfilling and an honor. Steele is deeply appreciative of the congre- gation, describing them as loving and supportive, and he values the strong sense of community at JFBC. Winning the recognition as the Finest Pastor and Church came as a surprise to Steele, who is more comfortable serving behind the scenes. He expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment, crediting the vibrant and generous community of JFBC and praising the dedicated staff, including Worship and Educa- tion Pastor John Young and Family and Student Pastor Dusty Tudors. Looking to the future, Steele is focused on continuing the church’s mission of “Love God, Love Peo- ple, Make Disciples.” JFBC offers a range of activities including two Sunday services, small groups, Wednesday evening meals, and var- ious programs for all ages. They are excited to kick off the new school year and begin their second year of Wee Warriors, a program for young children.
