The Marion Tribune, Thursday, July 25, 2024— 9A 10 Tennessee locals pedal toward record-breaking $75 million fundraising goal in the 2024 Pan-Mass challenge O n Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4, more than 6,500 rid- ers, including 10 Tennes- see residents, will par- ticipate in the milestone 45th Pan-Mass Chal- lenge (PMC) with the goal of raising a record $75 million for Dana- Farber Cancer Institute (Dana-Farber). As of this July, the PMC crossed $1 billion in lifetime fund- raising for Dana-Farber since 1980. “Thanks to the fi erce determination of PMC riders, volunteers, do- nors and sponsors, I’m con fi dent that this will be our biggest fundraising year yet,” said Billy Starr, founder and executive di- rector of the PMC. “We’ve crossed $1 billion in to- tal donations for cancer research and treatment since I founded the PMC in 1980 – I am looking forward to cycling along- side everyone on the road in August as we hit this momentous achievement together.” As the #3 top-grossing peer-to-peer fundraising organization in the coun- try, the PMC donates 100 percent of every rider- raised dollar directly to Dana-Farber to support cancer research and pa- tient care, accounting for 62 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. For more than four de- cades, PMC funds have allowed Dana-Farber to achieve lifesaving clini- cal breakthroughs and advancements. In the last fi ve years alone, Da- na-Farber doctors and researchers have played a substantial role in de- veloping more than half of all cancer drugs ap- proved by the FDA. Cyclists come togeth- er from all corners of the world to ride between 25 and 211 miles—11 coun- tries and 45 states, ter- ritories, and districts— with one mission: to raise as much money as pos- sible for Dana-Farber. Most participate in hon- or of a family member or friend fi ghting cancer, and nearly 1,000 riders and volunteers are can- cer survivors or current patients, considered Liv- ing Proof® of the PMC mission. There are also 160 Dana-Farber em- ployees committed to the cause as riders and volunteers, in some cases to fund their own cancer research. The PMC is co-pre- sented by the Red Sox Foundation® and M&T Bank. To make a fi nan- cial contribution to a rider from your town or to register as a rider, visit www.pmc.org, or call (800) WE-CYCLE. The PMC was founded in 1980 by Billy Starr, who remains the event’s executive direc- tor, an annual cyclist and a fundraiser. The PMC has since raised $972 million for adult and pe- diatric patient care and cancer research at Dana- Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The event donates 100 percent of every rider- raised dollar directly to the cause, generating 62 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue as Dana-Farber’s single larg- est contributor. The PMC has successfully melded support from committed cyclists, volunteers, cor- porate sponsors and indi- vidual contributors, all of which are essential to the PMC’s goal and model: to attain maximum fun- draising e ffi ciency while increasing its annual gift. The PMC’s hope and aspi- ration is to provide Dana- Farber’s doctors and re- searchers with the neces- sary resources to discover cures for all cancers.
