The Marion Tribune, Thursday, June 13, 2024— 5A Donot rely solely on fl otationdevices to keep children safe; an adult should super- vise until children are strong swimmers. Inform someone of your location and expected return time. Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America) recommends the “Reach, Throw, Row, Go” approach when rescuing someone struggling in thewater: Reach: From the shore, use a long ob- ject likeabranchor fi shingpole toreachthe victimand pull themto safety. Throw: If the victim is out of reach, throwa life preserver or PFD to them. Row: Use a watercraft to row out to the person and bring themaboard. Go: Enter thewater to rescue the victim only as a last resort, after attempting the previous three steps. Implementing these guidelines can sig- ni fi cantly improve safety and prevent fur- ther tragedies in and aroundwater. Order the food for your next event from our Deli! about the planning com- mission’s approvals of both the preliminary and fi nal plats for River Gorge Ranch, despite ongo- ing questions from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) and the Tennessee AmericanWater Com- pany. She expressed her worry about the transparency of the ap- proval process for luxury home developments in Marion County, noting that it often lacksmeaning- ful citizen input and seems overly favorable to developers at the ex- pense of local residents and the natural environment. Lighty then posed three ques- tions to the County Commission- ers and Planning Commission members present: Can the county commission, mayor, and county attorney iden- tify any falsehoods inMichael Ray Taylor’s articles? She urged them to go on record with any such in- formation. Has anyoneon theplanningor county commission received pay- ment or provided services to any Marion County developers, and if so, have they abstained from vot- ing on related projects to avoid con fl icts of interest? Does any member of either commission hold ownership in- terest in any developer’s lots with- inMarionCounty? These questions were aimed at uncovering potential con fl icts of interest and ensuring transpar- ency and accountability within the boards’ decision-making pro- cesses. Chairperson Linda Mason re- sponded to the articles Taylor, as- serting that theywerenot factually correct. She denied any claims of placing a commissioner on a com- mittee to favor any decision or de- veloper. CommissionerChrisMorrison criticized the in fl uence of outsid- ers, emphasizing that the local community has been established for over 200 years and suggesting that external criticisms are unwar- ranted. He clari fi ed that everyone on theplanning commission is ap- pointed by a vote of the commis- sion and asserted that nomember had received special treatment from developer John Thornton in exchange for favorable votes. Commissioner Gene Har- gis also refuted the claims made in the articles. He advised that Matt Blansett worked security for Thornton when he began selling lots at Jasper Highlands and once asked Hargis to cover a shift so he could attend his son’s ball game. Commissioner Hargis con fi rmed that he earned money for the work, but it was through a di ff er- ent company, theTennesseeRiver Gorge Trust, not Thornton’s. He expressed his belief that the ar- ticles were “slanted wrong” and noted that he had never seen Tay- lor at any planning commission meetings. These statements were part of a broader defense by the com- missioners against allegations of bias and improper conduct in the approval processes for local devel- opments. The meeting concluded with- out a clear resolution and the ses- sion proceeded to other business. Lighty had requested to speak on agenda item number 14, titled “Nashville Scene - Commissioner Ruric Brandt.” However, this item was not discussed by the board as Commissioner Brandt was absent fromthemeeting. would further exacerbate the fi - nancial challenges. Additionally, Attorney Raines clari fi ed that the water line inquestion is owned by the county, and the town of Jas- per has not yet accepted it. Any potential decision regarding the acceptance of the line falls under the Board of Mayor and Alder- men’s jurisdiction. Attorney Raines empha- sized that Jasper does not o ff er payment plans for connection fees, either within the city or in the county areas serviced by the town. He stressed that waiving fees would set a precedent, lead- ing to similar requests fromother customers. He also highlighted the costs associated with install- ingmeter sockets, including labor and equipment, which are cov- ered by the existing fee structure. Therefore, even if the town ac- cepts the water line, it is not fea- sible towaiveany connection fees. Kennedy clari fi ed that he was not requesting the connection fees to be waived. However, the discussion ended without a clear resolution. Tips Articles Continued from Page 1 Water Continued from Page 1 Continued from Page 1
