Field position costly as Vikes fall to Eagles By RICKEY CLARDY Sports Writer U NIONVILLE — The Community Vikings were forced to start their possessions deep in their territory as the Eagleville Eagle special teams played a key factor on kicko ff s while the Eagle defense kept the Vikings at bay as Community fell 62-6 in the home football opener for the Vikings Friday night. With the Vikings reel- ing from a week disrupt- ed with players out due to the horse show break, Community began the contest on its own 26- yard line after a 17-yard kicko ff return by Charles Haskins. But a penalty and a stingy Eagle defense forced the Vikings to punt, eventually giving Eagleville possession in the Community red zone. It took just one play as Marshall Fields ran 19 yards for the score to put the Eagles on the score- board. The kick by John Thomas Parkerson put Eagleville up 7-0 with 10:19 remaining in the opening quarter. With Parker’s kicko ff s pinning the Vikings back, Com- munity started its next four possessions inside its 25-yard line. Community could not connect with the passing game as several throws fell to the ground o ff the hands of Viking receiv- ers, forcing the Vikings to punt from the shadow of their goal post. The Eagles responded with four more scores on a recovered fumble in the end zone by Mar- shall Spann, two TD runs by Kaleb Snitzer, and a touchdown pass from Benton Fox to Noah Lilly as the Eagles ended the quarter with a 34-0 lead. “We had tough fi eld position to get started and didn’t get it going,” Coach Chris Grooms of the Vikings said. “We were missing a couple of linemen so we were trying to put some subs in trying to fi nd the right combo.” The Eagles kept up the pressure in the sec- ond quarter as a fumble return for a score and a touchdown run gave Ea- gleville a 48-0 halftime lead. Another touchdown run by Snitzer, this one for 50 yards, put the Ea- gles up 55-0 in the third quarter. After the Eagles scored their fi nal touch- down in the fourth quar- ter to go up 62-0, the Vi- kings made some noise. On second down, Isaac Jacobs found space in the Eagle secondary and avoided several Ea- gleville tacklers to com- plete a 42-yard run for the score to put Commu- nity on the scoreboard and end the scoring in the game. “He’s a good ath- lete. He was here with me all week and never missed,” Grooms said. “I said when we get to the fourth, the kids who have been here all week are going to get in and run it,” Grooms added. We found that out on Thursday. We tried to make the adjust- ment as quickly as we could. Christian is an un- real athlete and is just a dawg. He took it on and is going to carry us through the season,” Carku ff said. In addition the run game, Gooch gave Cas- cade a big spark in the re- turn game as well, high- lighted by his kicko ff re- turned for a touchdown. “We tell him to use it as much as he can be- cause it’s God-given. That was awesome to see,” Carku ff said. While it’s been a tough start to the season for Cascade so far, the Champions don’t have much time to dwell on Friday night’s loss. On Thursday, Cas- cade will travel to Hunt- land for another non-dis- trict tilt. “A short week doesn’t matter. Nobody cares about all the excuses or how we feel. We have to show up and play foot- ball on Thursday because that’s what the schedule says,” Carku ff said. Kicko ff is set for 7 p.m. in Huntland. Labron Ransom came up with a big de- fensive play when he in- tercepted a pass late in the fi rst half. Shelbyville Central failed to take advantage of the scoring opportu- nity and even the score going into halftime.” We had a great chance to score after the interception but a costly penalty set back and we couldn’t overcome it,” Dryden said. “If we score there then get the ball to start the second half and score, who knows how that might have changed the game.” Shelbyville Central scored on a Bailey 56- yard run, then Steven Bobo raced 77 yards to the end zone and all of a sudden the Golden Ea- gles were up 28-21. Marshall County re- sponded with a 70-yard pass from Thompson to Jones to even the score at 28-28 going into the fourth quarter.
