Knowing Virginia’s boating laws, maintaining a proper lookout, being con- stantly aware of your surroundings, ad- justing speed to accommodate conditions and using common sense and common courtesy all contribute to a safe boating environment. At Lake Anna, dock signs are in use to make your time on the lake safer. Almost 500 waterfront homeowners and common areas have installed these signs to help boaters identify their exact location on the water. In an emergency, boaters can use the yellow signs to tell a 911 operator exactly where they are. In the example at right, the first letter means “Louisa” and the second letter means “downlake.” All dock signs are linked to the 911 street address so re- sources can be dispatched without delay.
