10 The Central Virginian • 2023 • Lure of Lake Anna The winery is family owned and operated, established by husband and wife, Bill and Ann Heidig, before their sons, Jeff and Eric, took the reins in 2002. It started as a vineyard. Bill Heidig was working overseas in France during 1980, where he developed an interest in vi - ticulture. He found that certain regions of the country’s wine industry had similar climes and terrain as the family farm back in Spotsylvania. Upon his return home, Bill began the endeavor of grape growing with the help of his wife and sons. “Initially, the intent was just to grow grapes and to sell them. At that time, Virginia as an industry wasn’t really estab - lished as it is now. There was probably a handful of winer - ies,” Jeff says. Continued on Page 18
